For most travellers, the two best seasons for Sikkim and Darjeeling are March to May and October to mid-December. In these months the temperature is pleasantly cool and the sky is often clear, giving the best views of Kanchenjunga. But every season has something to offer, and the right time depends on what you want to see.
Month by month
| Months | Weather | Good for | Keep in mind |
|---|---|---|---|
| March โ April | Mild days, cool nights | Rhododendrons, Tsomgo Lake with snow around it, sightseeing | Some haze; occasional showers |
| May โ early June | Warm days in Gangtok, cool in the north | Yumthang flowers, family holidays, escaping the heat | Peak season โ book early |
| Mid-June โ September | Monsoon, heavy rain | Green hills, waterfalls, fewer crowds, off-season rates | Landslides; North Sikkim roads often closed |
| October โ November | Clear, crisp and dry | Best mountain views, Tiger Hill, Gurudongmar, festivals | Very busy around Durga Puja and Diwali |
| December โ February | Cold; snow at higher places | Snow at Tsomgo, Lachung and Zero Point; clear skies | Some high roads close after snowfall; Gurudongmar often closed |
Spring (March to May)
Spring is the season of colour. Rhododendrons bloom across the hills, and Yumthang Valley is at its best in April and May. Tsomgo Lake often still has snow around it in March and April. It is a lovely time for families, though May is very busy with summer holidays from the plains.
Monsoon (June to September)
The rains turn everything bright green and fill the waterfalls, and hotels offer off-season discounts. But landslides are common, flights and drives can be delayed, and North Sikkim roads are often closed. If you travel in the monsoon, keep your plan flexible and avoid tight connections.
Autumn (October to November)
After the rains the air is washed clean, and this is the clearest time of year for Kanchenjunga, Tiger Hill and Gurudongmar Lake. Festival season brings big crowds from Kolkata and other cities, so book rooms, cars and the toy train early.
Winter (December to February)
Winter is cold but often sunny. It is the best time to see snow: Tsomgo Lake freezes, and Lachung and Zero Point are white. Higher roads can close after heavy snowfall, and Gurudongmar is often inaccessible. Gangtok, Pelling and Darjeeling remain open and pleasant in the daytime, with very cold nights.

Our hotels usually offer off-season discounts from mid-January to March and from July to September. Contact us for rates for your dates.
